Triumph Gearbox Conversion Kits

Triumph TR2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, five speed conversion.

This Triumph TR range of five speed conversions has been developed in response to the demands of TR owners who have problems with overdrive, no overdrive, or simply wish to have a modern gearbox with all gears under the control of gearlever and clutch.

This range of conversions complements Hi-Gear Engineering's range of MG conversions which are highly successful with 4,000 world wide sales since 1998.

The TR conversion features a heavy duty version of the Ford Type 9 gearbox with power capacity of 240 hp and torque capacity 200 1bf ft.

The gear ratios are similar to TR ratios and are 2.98, 1.97, 1.37, 1.0, 0.82/1. Other closer ratios are available at extra cost.

To enable the gearbox to fit into the TR chassis, the rear casing has been specially redesigned to place the gear lever in the correct position and to suit "A" and "J" type gearbox mountings.

A special bell housing similar to the TR bell housing in shape, joins the engine backplate to the gearbox. The original clutch operating shaft, slave cylinder, and fork are re-used.

The conversion fits into the TR chassis with no chassis/ body modification.

A precalibrated speedometer system uses the existing speedo cable. Consequently no re-calibration of the speedometer is required.

The gear lever exits the transmission tunnel in exactly the original position.

The TR 2/3 gear lever exits the transmission tunnel two inches further back then original in response to owners criticism of the original position being too close to the dashboard.

In the case of the TR4A, 5 and 6 the "H" frame which connects and stiffens the dashboard to the floor, is moved back 20mm (3/4 inch) to allow the dash support bracket moulded cover to clear the gearbox.

Parts included in the conversion enable this to be accomplished satisfactorily and retain the original integrity and stiffness of the body/dashboard. These are 2 special floor brackets, distance pieces and bolts for the dashboard connection. A crackle black filler/ angle plate is used to retain the original appearance.

The original clutch cover and release bearing are used, a new release bearing carrier is supplied together with a new clutch driven plate.

A new spigot bush replaces the original, in the normal position.

The conversion comprises the following parts:
